There is a glaring flaw in Putin’s rationale for annexing Ukraine.
The criteria by which he asserts the commonality of Ukrainian and Russian ethnicity is the same criteria by which he asserts the commonality of Chechan, Jewish, Arab, Ukrainian, and Russian identity. In fact, Putin views all 300 ethnic groups living in former Soviet republics as equally Russian regardless of what their race or ethnicity is.
How do we know?
He openly brags about it.
Western nationalists would already know about Putin’s civic nationalism if they weren’t too busy fanning his balls.
