Love him or hate him, Richard Spencer was the most publicly recognizable face of the American dissident right for a few years at the latter half of the last decade. During the time he was active, he appeared to be strongly influenced by Dugin’s pan-Eurasian ideology, which may have been a consequence of the fact that he was married to Dugin’s English-language translator.
Fast forward to the current year and you’ll find Spencer walking back some of his prior Eurasianist positions (as well as his positions on race) in lieu of his divorce. He claims “linguistic analysis” will prove many of his pro-Russia tweets were actually posted by his wife, who apparently had access to his social media accounts.
Regardless of whether or not this is true, he does seem interested in distancing himself from what appeared to be his ideology at the time. And he makes a salient point in doing so:
You can’t just take the other side when your country is in a geopolitical conflict.
